BJP politician K. Annamalai fired a sharp critique at the Tamil Nadu state cabinet after a string of court rulings on his social media in Chennai on Friday. The Supreme Court and the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court issued several decisions that the DMK‑run government had hoped would stay on its side.
Annamalai posted on X that “From Delhi to Madurai, justice is chasing the DMK government faster than its own conscience.” He slammed the state on a day when the Supreme Court refused to interfere with an order from the Madras High Court that set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe a kidney‑theft scandal involving hospitals owned by a DMK MLA.
“The DMK Government accepted the SIT, but insisted the government would select the officers in the team,” Annamalai wrote. He added, “How shameful!”
The Supreme Court also declined to stay an order that transferred the murder case of BSP leader Thiru Armstrong to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Armstrong, a former legislator, was killed in a stabbings incident in September 2024. Annamalai questioned why the state feared a CBI probe.
Another major judgment dealt with the Karur stampede that took place during a Tamil Kanavu Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally. The Supreme Court struck down the DMK Government’s attempt to block a CBI investigation into the tragedy that left 41 people dead and many injured. The court also criticised the Madras High Court for hearing the case in Chennai when the case should have been in the Madurai bench, where Karur falls under its jurisdiction.
Annamalai noted that the TVK had sought an independent inquiry led by a former supreme court judge. The top court’s ruling emphasized that the state must allow the CBI to conduct its investigation.
In a separate issue, the Madras High Court delivered a split verdict on the Thiruparangundram case. The third judge, Justice Vijay Kumar, joined the two‑judge bench and banned animal sacrifice at the Sikandar Dargah atop Thiruparangundram Hill. He also ordered that the hill’s name remain Thiruparangundram and not be changed to Sikandar Hill or Samanar Kundru.
These judgments have left the DMK government scrambling at both the state and national level. Annamalai’s criticism highlights the growing judicial pressure on the Tamil Nadu government. The legal battles over organ trafficking, political murders, mass‑casualty incidents, and cultural heritage disputes are likely to dominate headlines for weeks to come.
