The central government has approved the appointment of Justice Shree Chandrashekhar as the new Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. This decision follows a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium, the body responsible for judicial appointments in India.
According to a statement from the Union Law Ministry, President Droupadi Murmu has officially appointed Justice Chandrashekhar as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. He will take charge from the day he assumes his new office.
Justice Chandrashekhar’s journey to this important role began in 1993 when he enrolled with the Delhi State Bar Council after completing his law degree from Delhi University. He worked as a lawyer in Delhi for nearly 19 years, mainly handling criminal and civil cases. During this time, he appeared in around 3,500 cases and in more than 140 Supreme Court judgments.
In January 2013, he was appointed as an Additional Judge at the Jharkhand High Court. By June 2014, he became a permanent judge there. Recently, he served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court before his appointment to Bombay.
Justice Chandrashekhar was born on May 25, 1965, and has a rich legal background. Following his elevation, he stepped into the role of Chief Justice after Justice Alok Aradhe was elevated to the Supreme Court. His appointment comes at a time when the Bombay High Court is set to have a new chief to oversee its affairs.
This appointment highlights the ongoing process of strengthening India’s judiciary and ensuring smooth functioning in the courts.
