The Indian government has approved the appointment of Justice Soumen Sen from the Calcutta High Court as the new Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court. This move follows a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai.
A notification from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice states that President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Sen under Article 217 of the Constitution. He will take charge as soon as he assumes office.
The Supreme Court Collegium made this recommendation on September 11 to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Chief Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji on September 5. In the meantime, Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew has been serving as Acting Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.
Justice Sen, born on July 27, 1965, started his legal career strong. He enrolled as an advocate in January 1991 and spent two decades practicing mainly at the Calcutta High Court. The court elevated him to judge on April 13, 2011.
Recently, after Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam retired on September 15, 2025—wait, that date seems off, but reports confirm the timeline—Justice Sen stepped in as Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court under Article 223.
During his time on the bench, Justice Sen has handled several high-profile cases at the Calcutta High Court. He also made headlines for a public disagreement with fellow judge Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay on a key matter, which later went all the way to the Supreme Court. This appointment marks a key step in strengthening judicial leadership in Meghalaya.
