In Jorhat, Assam, Zubeen Garg’s sister, Palme Borthakur, breathed a sigh of relief on Wednesday after police arrested Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma in connection with the beloved Assamese singer’s death. She called on fans and the public to trust the justice system, noting that her family is fully cooperating with investigators.

Speaking to reporters in Jorhat, Borthakur shared her thoughts candidly. “After these two arrests, I feel a bit relieved because the police and government are handling this the right way,” she said. “We’re cooperating completely, and justice will be served. I urge everyone to trust the system and not lose hope.”

The arrests mark a key development in the probe into Zubeen Garg’s tragic death. Shyamkanu Mahanta, who organized the North East Music Festival in Singapore, and Siddharth Sharma, the singer’s manager, appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kamrup. The court remanded them to 14 days of police custody. Assam Police picked them up early Wednesday morning, and heavy security now surrounds the Crime Investigation Department (CID) office in Guwahati, where officers are questioning the suspects.

Zubeen Garg, the 52-year-old icon of Assamese music, passed away on September 19 due to a scuba diving accident in Singapore. His body first arrived in Delhi before flying to Guwahati on a commercial flight on September 21, where thousands mourned the star known for his soulful hits.

The investigation gained momentum last week when Assamese actress Nishita Goswami and Zubeen’s co-musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami showed up at the CID office on September 27 to assist the probe. The CID has filed case number 18/2025 under sections 61(2), 105, and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, treating the scuba diving accident death as suspicious.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier warned the suspects to surrender to the CID by October 6, or face tough legal consequences. Multiple FIRs already name Siddharth Sharma, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, Shyamkanu Mahanta, and others as potentially responsible for the singer’s untimely demise.

As the Zubeen Garg death investigation unfolds, authorities promise a thorough look into what happened during that fateful trip to Singapore. Fans continue to seek answers and closure for their music legend.
