Bengaluru – Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said on Sunday that the state’s earlier caste census was flawed and that a fresh survey will begin. He urged the public to accept the new census, noting that a court order also requires it.
Shivakumar told reporters, “People can raise objections, but the survey must happen. The courts have said it must be done, so opposition is meaningless.” He added that he cannot decide whether the survey will be extended; the department and the commission will determine that.
Two days earlier, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reaffirmed Karnataka’s promise to complete the census. He said the team expects to finish by October 7. Behind the scenes, the state has already surveyed 30 million people across about 8 million households – but 18 million families still need to be covered.
The census isn’t meant to split society. It aims to collect essential socio‑economic, educational and health data about Karnataka’s residents. Shivakumar explained that the new “Kantharaj report” mistakenly listed some castes like Brahmin and Christian. The commission has now removed those categories, so the government will only record castes that people voluntarily declare.
Siddaramaiah criticized the BJP for spreading misinformation for political gains. The government stays on track to finish the survey and provide the data needed for fair resource distribution.
