Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara shared his deep condolences on Sunday for the tragic Karur stampede in Tamil Nadu, where 39 people lost their lives and many others got injured during a political rally.
Speaking in Tumakuru, Parameshwara called the incident heartbreaking, especially since it happened at a public event in the country. “More security should have been in place for such large gatherings,” he told reporters. He avoided specifics about the organizers or security setup, saying it’s not fair to comment without full details. Looking ahead, he noted that extra security measures are ready for the upcoming Tumkur Dasara program to keep everyone safe.
Earlier that day, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor voiced his sorrow over the Karur stampede from Thiruvananthapuram, pointing out serious issues with crowd management in India. “It’s devastating to see these tragedies repeat year after year,” Tharoor said. He recalled past incidents, like the one in Bengaluru, and highlighted the pain of losing children in such chaos.
Tharoor urged the central and state governments to step up with tough new rules and safety protocols for big events. People flock to rallies for popular politicians—sometimes stars from movies or cricket—expecting fun, not danger. “We need a national policy to protect everyday folks,” he added, calling for strict standards to stop needless losses in stampedes.
In response to the Karur tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced financial aid from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). Families of the 39 victims will get Rs 2 lakh each, while injured people receive Rs 50,000.
The Prime Minister’s Office shared the news on X, emphasizing support for those affected by the unfortunate incident at the political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu.
