Protests Erupt Over India-Pakistan Asia Cup Clash Amid Tensions
In a show of strong opposition, Shiv Sena (UBT) workers burned the Pakistani flag outside the Thiruvananthapuram Accountant General’s office on Sunday. They protested against the India vs Pakistan match in the Asia Cup, highlighting the growing anger over the cricket showdown.
Over in Bengaluru, crowds took to the streets, chanting "BCCI murdabad" to voice their frustration with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for allowing the game to go ahead. The protests reflect deep sentiments tied to recent India-Pakistan tensions, with many calling for a boycott of the high-stakes Asia Cup encounter.
Earlier that day, women workers from Shiv Sena (UBT) in Mumbai held an indoor demonstration, urging India to skip the match against Pakistan. The Asia Cup 2023 fixture, set for September 14 in Dubai, has sparked widespread debate across the country.
Adding to the buzz, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey fired off a letter to Sony Pictures Private Limited, demanding they halt the live telecast of the India-Pakistan Asia Cup match. In his note to Sony Live, Dubey wrote, "We request you put a complete ban on the live broadcast of the India-Pakistan Asia Cup match 2023 at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The match should not be broadcast in India. We expect a speedy and positive response from you."
Dubey’s appeal comes as the political party ramps up criticism of the event, scheduled at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. With India and Pakistan set to face off as arch-rivals, the game has divided opinions far beyond the field.
Indian cricket fans, too, are split on whether the match should happen. Mumbai resident Shubham Chavan shared his mixed feelings with : "The match should not take place. But as a sportsman, it should. India vs Pakistan is a big match. The matches are thrilling. It goes till the last over. So, it will be entertaining. India will win."
From Ahmedabad in Gujarat, cricket enthusiast Asgar Ali took a firmer stance: "This match should not be played. Such a big incident took place in our country, but still we are playing a cricket match against them. According to me, we should boycott this completely."
On the flip side, another fan argued for keeping sports separate: "The match should be taking place. Sports and war are two different things. We should not mix them. We will watch this match definitely."
As the Indian cricket team gears up to battle Pakistan today, the Asia Cup controversy continues to dominate conversations, blending cricket passion with national sentiments.
