Chennai – The Supreme Court’s decision to hand the investigation of the Karur stampede over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was welcomed by both the AIADMK and the BJP, saying the move shows that every citizen deserves a fair and transparent inquiry.

The AIADMK posted a statement on social media condemning the government’s alleged attempts to muzzle the probe. “Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done,” the party said, calling the court’s order a step toward accountability.

BJP state chief Nainar Nagenthran announced on X that a CBI probe has long been a priority for his party. “I thank the Supreme Court,” he wrote. “The DMK is trying to spin stories to shift blame and to damage our opposition. The truth will soon surface, exposing the political motives behind this tragedy. Those who turned murder into a political tool will be punished,” he added.

Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan also praised the verdict, calling it a “slap on the face of the DMK.” He accused the ruling party of running a “vicious campaign” against the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and said the verdict restores public faith in justice.

G.K. Vasan, president of the Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar), said the court’s decision will clear the confusion that followed the incident. “The political chaos after the tragedy was unsettling,” he said. “We urged a CBI probe to uncover the truth.”

Former AIADMK interim general secretary V.K. Sasikala echoed the sentiment, calling the verdict a “resounding slap on the face” of the DMK regime. “The truth behind the Karur stampede will soon emerge, and those responsible will not escape justice,” she said.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court transferred the investigation to the CBI and appointed a three‑member committee headed by former apex court judge Ajay Rastogi to monitor the probe’s progress.

The move is expected to intensify scrutiny of how the stampede unfolded and to hold those in power accountable for the 41 lives lost in the Karur tragedy.
