Tamil Nadu police are ramping up their probe into the deadly Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives, including women and children, by launching three special teams to hunt down TVK state general secretary N. Anand, better known as Bussy Anand.
This push follows growing calls to make top leaders of the new TVK party answer for the September 27 chaos. The tragedy unfolded in Velusamypuram near Karur, where thousands of fans packed a campaign rally for actor-turned-politician Vijay. A sudden crowd surge sparked panic, turning the event into a deadly stampede that killed 41 people and injured more than 60 others.
Early findings blame poor crowd control and mishandling of the massive turnout. Police have charged key TVK figures like Anand, joint general secretary Nirmal Kumar, and Karur West district secretary Mathiyazhagan with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, plus other counts for putting public safety at risk.
So far, officers have arrested Mathiyazhagan and South City treasurer Pounraj for questioning. A one-person judicial commission, headed by retired Madras High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan, is digging into what went wrong with planning, security, and managing the crowd at the Vijay rally.
Thanks to initial reports, police are zeroing in on Anand and Nirmal Kumar, who have dodged arrest since charges were filed. Officials say three teams are scouring several districts, checking digital trails, and watching potential hideouts to catch the TVK leaders.
In a related move, Chennai police have filed a case against TVK election wing general secretary Adhav Arjunan for posting inflammatory content on social media that could stir up trouble after the stampede tragedy.
This crackdown highlights authorities’ drive to stop harmful online narratives and ensure accountability in the Karur stampede—one of Tamil Nadu’s worst political rally disasters in years. It’s fueling bigger talks on crowd safety at mass events and the duties of rising political groups like TVK.
Victims’ families are urging quick justice and better rules to avoid future heartbreaks. The government has pledged tougher enforcement of rally regulations and criminal charges for negligence that costs lives.
