A tragic stampede at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, claimed 39 lives, drawing sharp criticism and swift support from leaders across India.
Congress leader Pramod Tiwari voiced his deep sorrow over the Karur stampede incident during a rally for Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay. Speaking from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Tiwari called it a heartbreaking event. “I offer my heartfelt condolences and pray for the quick recovery of the injured,” he said. He slammed the organizers for poor planning, noting that Vijay had permission for a limited crowd, but three times as many people showed up with no safety measures in place.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin stepped in quickly, announcing 10 lakh rupees in compensation for each victim’s family and 1 lakh rupees for those injured and receiving treatment. He also ordered a full inquiry into the Karur stampede to uncover what went wrong.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed the grief, sharing his condolences on social media a day earlier. “This unfortunate incident at the political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who lost loved ones. I wish them strength and pray for a speedy recovery for the injured,” Modi posted on X.
In a follow-up move, Modi’s office announced ex-gratia payments from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). Families of the 39 people who died in the Tamil Nadu rally stampede will get 2 lakh rupees each, while the injured receive 50,000 rupees.
State health officials confirmed the toll from the Vijay political rally stampede, with two patients still in critical condition. Police have filed a case to investigate the chaos that unfolded on Saturday at the event in Karur.
