Rahul Gandhi reached out to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to check on the aftermath of the tragic Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives during a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally. As the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and a Congress MP, Gandhi also called TVK President Vijay to offer his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who died.
The death toll in the Karur stampede climbed to 41 after 65-year-old Suguna from Karur district passed away in the hospital. She had been on ventilator support in the ICU but didn’t respond to treatment. Among the victims are 18 women, 13 men, five young girls, and five young boys. Most—34 people—hailed from Karur district, with two each from Erode, Tiruppur, and Dindigul districts, plus one from Salem.
The chaos erupted on Saturday at a massive TVK rally led by Vijay, where overcrowding sparked panic. The crowd grew out of control, causing several attendees to faint and rush to nearby hospitals for emergency care.
Tamil Nadu’s government has stepped in with a one-member enquiry commission led by retired High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan to investigate the Karur stampede and prevent future tragedies. During her visit to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Karur on Sunday, Justice Jagadeesan checked on the injured and shared positive updates with reporters. “All are fine in the hospital now. They are getting very good treatment,” she said.
In an earlier media chat before heading to Karur, she explained the commission’s goal: “We’ve set this up to address shortcomings. Incidents like this should not occur in the future, and we’ll take the necessary remedial measures.” Chief Minister MK Stalin appointed her to lead the probe into what went wrong at the overcrowded rally venue.
