Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has called for stricter rules on organizing public events after the deadly stampede in Karur, labeling it a heartbreaking tragedy that must never repeat.

In a video message shared on X, formerly Twitter, Stalin shared his deep sorrow over the incident. “What happened in Karur is a great tragedy—a cruel one that has never happened before and should never happen again,” he said. He described the painful scenes from his hospital visit, where he saw the impact firsthand, and noted that the grief still lingers.

Stalin acted quickly when he heard the news, directing district officials to respond immediately. That same night, he rushed to Karur. The stampede claimed 41 lives, including children and women, leaving families devastated. To support them, the government announced ₹10 lakh ex-gratia payments for each affected family, and distributions have already started. Injured victims are receiving full medical treatment free of charge in hospitals.

To uncover the exact causes of the Karur stampede, Stalin set up a one-member Commission of Inquiry led by former judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan. He promised that the government’s next steps will follow the commission’s findings. Stalin also urged people to ignore rumors and false information spreading on social media about the tragedy.

“No political leader or their supporters would ever want innocent lives lost like this,” Stalin emphasized. He stressed that the victims are all “our Tamil brothers and sisters,” regardless of their political ties. In this time of mourning, he asked everyone to stop sharing irresponsible or harmful details online.

Stalin called on political parties and public groups to work together on new guidelines for safely hosting events in the future. Once the commission reports back, the government plans to consult all parties to create these rules. “Human life is above everything else! Humanity is what we all need,” he added.

He encouraged leaders to put aside political differences, rivalries, and policies to focus on public welfare. “Tamil Nadu has always led the way for the nation in many areas. It’s our shared responsibility to prevent such incidents from ever happening again,” Stalin said.

Meanwhile, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party took legal action on Monday, filing a writ petition in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. They want the Karur stampede investigation shifted from state police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for an impartial probe.

TVK lawyer Arivazhagan told reporters that the petition accuses the ruling DMK party and its members of orchestrating the incident. It includes photos and documents as evidence. The court will hear the case on October 3.
