Kerala Opposition Leader Slams CM Pinarayi Vijayan Over Police Brutality and Corruption
In a fiery speech on Saturday, Kerala’s Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan hit out at Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, calling his silence on rising custodial torture and corruption scandals an "ostrich-like attitude." Satheesan accused Vijayan, who also holds the Home Minister portfolio, of turning a blind eye to the chaos gripping the state.
"The police now act like ruling party loyalists, spreading fear instead of protecting people," Satheesan said. He pointed to a series of shocking incidents in recent weeks that have left Kerala reeling. "This silence from the Chief Minister is unacceptable for someone in such a high constitutional role," he added.
Satheesan warned that Vijayan’s inaction has shattered public trust and weakened Kerala’s democracy. "The countdown to the end of this government has started," he declared. He promised to ramp up opposition protests both inside and outside the Kerala Assembly, which kicks off its session on Monday.
One major flashpoint? The harsh treatment of Kerala Students Union (KSU) activists. Police recently dragged them to court with heads covered and hands chained. "Are these students terrorists or dangerous criminals? This is a stain on our democracy," Satheesan fumed.
His comments come amid growing unrest even within the ruling CPI(M)’s youth wing, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI). Satheesan highlighted how the Thrissur district secretary of DYFI blasted local leaders, labeling them a "robbery gang" involved in shady deals and even influencing police postings for kickbacks. "If district leaders are robbers, state leaders are nothing short of looters," the youth leader reportedly said, piling more pressure on the CPI(M).
The Karuvannur cooperative bank scam keeps haunting the Kerala government too. Depositors lost over Rs 400 crore, ruining families who saved for surgeries, weddings, and homes. Many now face destitution. Satheesan claimed the Enforcement Directorate’s probe into the scam faces deliberate roadblocks, leaving victims without justice or relief.
Adding to the turmoil, a DYFI activist’s family has accused police of framing him in a false case and torturing him to death in custody. This allegation has only fueled the crisis in Kerala politics.
As the Assembly session begins, all eyes are on how the Kerala government responds to these mounting corruption allegations and police brutality claims. Satheesan’s bold stand signals tougher days ahead for Vijayan’s administration.
