The Kerala High Court told reporters on Friday to calm down and stop blowing up the story about missing gold from the gold‑plated copper covers of the Dwarapalaka idols at Sabarimala.
Two judges, Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan and Justice K. V. Jayakumar, said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has only just begun its probe. They warned that sensational headlines could hurt the investigation and the rights of anyone accused.
“We want the public to know what’s happening, but the accused must also get a fair and speedy trial,” the judges said. “We keep seeing people with incomplete knowledge give interviews, which creates mixed messages on radio, TV and online.”
The bench also highlighted how people with phones and cameras stream information without checking facts, and that can disturb the investigation and violate privacy rights. They urged the media to stay away from hype and stick to facts.
The court’s note came after a report from the Sabarimala Special Commissioner. The report flagged that the gold‑plated copper covers had been taken to Smart Creations for repair with no prior notice to the court or the commissioner. The Travancore Devaswom Board had removed the covers and handed them to the firm, backed by devotee Unnikrishnan Potti.
In short, the High Court’s warning reminds everyone that early, sensational coverage can mislead the public and stall justice in high‑profile cases like Sabarimala’s sacred property dispute.
