A migrant worker in Kerala has been taken into custody after police say he murdered his wife and buried her body next to an unfinished house in Kottayam’s Elappani area.
Soni S K., 31, was caught by the Ayarkunnam police at Ernakulam South railway station on Sunday. The 31‑year‑old construction worker tried to flee after his wife, Alpana Khatun, 28, was found dead. Both come from Murshidabad, West Bengal.
Police say the crime stemmed from Soni’s suspicion that Alpana was having an affair with another migrant labourer named Prakash. The couple had lived with their two children in a rented flat in Amayannur for two years. “Soni repeatedly argued with Alpana, but she kept contacting Prakash and even left home for a short time,” an officer told .
On the morning of October 14, Soni brought Alpana to an old construction site in Elappani. The pair quarreled, and Soni allegedly struck Alpana, strangled her, and bludgeoned her with a rod. He then dug a pit behind the house, buried the body, and covered it with soil to hide evidence.
Soni filed a missing‑person complaint on October 17, saying Alpana had gone to the market and never returned. CCTV footage, however, showed the couple walking toward the construction site that same morning — evidence that contradicted his story and raised police suspicions.
When Soni and his children vanished on October 18, investigators traced a cell phone to Ernakulam South station. A police team led by Sub‑Inspector Saju T. Lukose arrested the suspect there.
After interrogation, Soni confessed. Police recovered the buried remains, and a post‑mortem was carried out at Kottayam Medical College Hospital. The two children are now placed in a government care home.
Soni faces charges under Sections 103(1) and 101 (murder) and 238(a) (destroying evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.
