Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed deep sorrow on Saturday over a deadly stampede at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, that killed at least 31 people and injured dozens more.
The tragedy struck during a public event for TVK chief and actor Vijay in Karur on Saturday evening. Officials blame overcrowding at the venue, which caused chaos and led to many attendees fainting. Emergency teams rushed victims to nearby hospitals for urgent care.
Kharge, the Congress president, shared his heartbreak on X (formerly Twitter). “I’m deeply distressed by this unfortunate and tragic stampede at the political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, which claimed the lives of several innocent people,” he wrote. He offered heartfelt condolences to the families, sent prayers for the injured, and called on Congress workers to step up. “Provide every possible assistance to the victims and their families, and work alongside authorities for relief and prompt medical help,” Kharge urged.
Priyanka Gandhi echoed those sentiments in her own post on X. “Heartbroken by the tragic stampede in Karur, TN. My thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost their loved ones in this unimaginable tragedy,” she said. She wished strength for the grieving families and a quick recovery for the hurt, while asking Congress members in the area to help the injured and support relief efforts right away.
Tamil Nadu’s response kicked into high gear. DMK leader and former minister Senthil Balaji rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Karur on Chief Minister MK Stalin’s orders. He told reporters that 31 people have died so far, with 58 admitted for treatment—46 in private hospitals and 12 in government ones. “The CM immediately checked in after the stampede and sent the district collector, SP, and me to the hospital. We called in extra doctors for proper care,” Balaji said. Private hospitals got strict instructions not to charge the injured and to give them all needed medical attention. Stalin plans to visit Karur on Sunday to see the situation firsthand and meet victims and families.
Tamil Nadu’s Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Davidson Devaraj, warned that the death toll from the Karur stampede could rise above 30. “I’m heading to Karur now to inspect the site,” he told .
This heartbreaking incident highlights the dangers of overcrowding at large political rallies in Tamil Nadu, leaving communities in mourning and officials scrambling to aid survivors.
