On this International Day of Peace, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge turned to Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of Ahimsa to tackle today’s rising hatred and violence. With conflicts tearing the world apart, Kharge urged everyone to recommit to peace, non-violence, and unity.

In a post on X, he wrote, “As conflict and division scar our world, let us reaffirm our pledge to uphold peace, non-violence, and unity. Gandhi ji’s timeless philosophy of Ahimsa offers a remedy to hatred and violence—an eternal value rooted in India’s civilizational ethos.”

Kharge highlighted India’s strong tradition of promoting peace and dialogue. He said embracing diversity and building inclusive cooperation stand as powerful tools against war and inequality.

He also shared a thoughtful quote from India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru: “Peace is not a relationship of nations. It is a condition of mind brought about by a serenity of soul.”

The International Day of Peace, or World Peace Day, falls every year on September 21. The United Nations created this observance to boost peace ideals across nations and communities. For 2025, the theme is “Act Now for a Peaceful World,” calling on people, groups, and countries to take real steps against global issues and create lasting harmony.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres echoed these sentiments in a video message. “Our warring world is crying out for peace,” he said. “Lives are being ripped apart, childhoods extinguished, and human dignity discarded amidst the cruelty of war. Let’s silence the guns, end the suffering, and build bridges. Peace cannot wait.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath joined in with greetings on social media. In a post on X, he celebrated the ancient Indian idea of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’—the world as one family. “Heartfelt greetings to the residents of the state on World Peace Day! Global peace and the advancement of humanity are enshrined in this eternal ideal, leading us from conflicts to solutions. Let us internalize this mantra and resolve to build a society rich in cooperation, goodwill, and harmony.”

Ultimately, World Peace Day reminds us that true peace goes beyond stopping wars. It means pursuing justice, equality, and kindness for everyone.
