Boosting STEM Education in Lakshadweep: Kerala Distributes Robotics Kits to Island Schools
In a exciting move to power up education in Lakshadweep, Kerala’s KITE—the tech wing of the state’s Department of General Education—has rolled out robotics kits to schools across the nine islands. This step aims to spark interest in robotics and give Class 10 students real-world, hands-on learning aligned with the Kerala curriculum.
These kits make STEM subjects—science, technology, engineering, and maths—fun and interactive for students. Imagine building circuits, working with sensors, and coding devices to come alive! KITE supplied a total of 100 robotics kits, ensuring one kit for every three students to encourage group projects and practical experiments.
The rollout came with a five-day training program for high school ICT teachers and faculty from the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) in Lakshadweep. The sessions kicked off on Thursday at KITE’s Regional Resource Centre in Kochi. Kerala’s General Education Minister V. Sivankutty launched the program online, highlighting the government’s push to close education gaps in the islands.
"The Kerala government stands firm in delivering top-notch resources, including cutting-edge technology, so Lakshadweep students get world-class education," Sivankutty said.
KITE CEO K. Anvar Sadath handed over the kits to school reps during the event. Tailored for the new "World of Robots" chapter in the Class 10 ICT textbook, these kits cover key topics like circuit building, sensors, actuators, and programming. Powered by the ESP32 Devkit v1 microcontroller, they offer a solid foundation for robotics learning in Lakshadweep schools.
This builds on KITE’s recent AI training for postgraduate teachers in the islands. Sadath shared plans for the next phase: training primary and upper primary teachers. Back in Kerala, KITE has already distributed 29,000 robotics kits, and schools needing more can buy them directly. This year, robotics joins the ICT curriculum for over four lakh Class 10 students statewide, making hands-on tech education a big part of school life.
