Kolkata – In a video that has spread through social‑media channels in West Bengal, Jeevan Singh, the underground chief of the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), called on the Rajbanshi community to step up against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the 2025 state assembly elections.
Singh urged Rajbanshi voters in North Bengal to oppose TMC candidates and to pressure any TMC lawmakers or MPs who still serve the party to quit and join the effort to topple Mamata Banerjee’s government. “Stop working against the Rajbanshi people for this government. Leave the party,” he said.
The Rajbanshi people hold sway in several constituencies across Cooch Behar, Malda, and other northern districts. In those areas the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has gained ground in recent elections, while TMC has struggled to maintain its hold since 2019. Singh’s call therefore targets a key voter bloc that could tip the balance in the upcoming election.
The KLO has a long track record of demanding a separate Kamtapur state that would include districts from West Bengal, Assam and even Nepal’s Jhapa district. Since its formation in 1985, the group has used armed resistance to push its cause. Singh gave a similar appeals video in 2023 ahead of the panchayat polls, urging Rajbanshi voters to reject TMC candidates.
The authenticity of the current video has not been independently confirmed by media outlets. Journalists report that Singh remains underground, making it difficult to verify his claims. However, the message reflects a broader trend of regional leaders rallying minority communities behind opposition parties in West Bengal.
For voters, the key takeaway is that a decision in the northern districts could influence the overall state result. Whether Rajbanshi voters take Singh’s call will be clear as the 2025 elections approach.
