In a big win against drug trafficking in Kolkata, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has cracked down on a major racket. Officials seized drugs worth about Rs 26 crore and nabbed 10 people, including the mastermind behind the operation. This happened as part of a swift raid on Friday morning.
The haul includes 32.466 kg of cannabis (ganja), 22.027 kg of hydroponic weed, and 345 grams of cocaine. They also grabbed cash linked to the drug sales.
DRI teams struck at three spots right away. One was at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport in Kolkata. The other two were homes in the Bijoygarh area of Jadavpur.
At the mastermind’s house, officers found a stash of hydroponic weed, cannabis, and cocaine. The second spot, a rented place run by the same guy, had loads of cannabis packed and ready to sell on the streets of Kolkata.
Four of the mastermind’s helpers, who handled local sales and distribution, got caught there. DRI also seized cash from these spots – money made from peddling these narcotics.
On the same day, they picked up another syndicate member who lined up suppliers from abroad.
Meanwhile, at NSCBI Airport in Dumdum, four carriers – including three women – landed from Bangkok. These folks were part of the same drug trafficking network. Officers stopped them and recovered more narcotics from their bags.
All 10 arrested are Indian nationals: the kingpin, international carriers, street-level distributors, and middlemen. The DRI produced them in court for remand under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
