The West Bengal government is set to kick off the Durga Puja carnival on Red Road in Kolkata this Sunday. The event will feature 106 well‑known puja committees and is the official finale to the city’s Durga celebrations.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, her cabinet, and a host of dignitaries are expected to attend. To keep the carnival running safely, the city’s police have tightened security. Nearly a hundred officers will patrol Red Road and Kidderpore Road, which will be closed to traffic on Sunday. Every idol will be guarded by a dedicated officer, and a buffer zone will keep the booths from overlapping.
Police officials also plan to fly drones to keep an eye on crowds and to protect the immersion ceremony on Babu Ghat later that night. Special arrangements are in place for foreign guests who will visit the carnival.
To help commuters get around the city during the festivities, the Kolkata Metro will run extra trains on the Blue and Green lines. Six special services – three inbound and three outbound – will operate with roughly a 20‑minute gap between each run, easing travel for everyday passengers.
With these measures in place, the West Bengal government hopes the Durga Puja carnival on Red Road will be a smooth, memorable end to the festival season for Kolkata’s residents and visitors alike.
