In a shocking case out of Kolkata, police arrested a college professor, her daughter, and her brother on Monday for kidnapping a young girl from the busy Dum Dum metro station area. The girl, who lived on the streets nearby with her family, has now been safely rescued from the suspects’ home.
The incident unfolded on September 19, when the girl vanished after heading home from the footpath where her family stays. Her parents, along with her three siblings, grew worried when she didn’t return. They searched everywhere but came up empty, so they filed a missing child report at the local Sinthi Police Station. Officers jumped into action right away.
CCTV footage from the Dum Dum area revealed the heartbreaking details. The professor’s daughter, Anushka Chanda Chowdhury, lured the girl away by offering her coconut water. Anushka’s mother, Arunima Chanda—a physics professor at Deenabandhu Andrews College—was right there but didn’t step in to stop it. The trio then hopped on the metro and took the girl to their place in Garia, where they kept her hidden.
This morning, Kolkata police raided the house and freed the girl unharmed. They nabbed Arunima, Anushka, and Arunima’s brother, Anupava Chanda, all from the Kasba neighborhood. “We rescued the child during the operation and arrested the three suspects,” a senior Kolkata police officer told reporters. “They’ll face court soon, and we’re pushing for police custody to dig deeper.”
During questioning, the suspects gave conflicting stories that raised red flags. Arunima claimed her daughter, who has no kids of her own, just wanted to “adopt” the girl and raise her like family. But police aren’t buying it—sources say her statements don’t add up.
Now, investigators are probing whether this ties into a larger child trafficking ring in Kolkata or if the kidnapping aimed to force the girl into child labor. The case has spotlighted vulnerabilities for street kids near busy spots like Dum Dum metro station, and authorities vow to keep searching for answers.
