Tragic Truck Crash Mars Ganesh Visarjan in Hassan: 8 Dead, Over 20 Injured
In a heartbreaking turn of events during the Ganesh Visarjan festival in Karnataka’s Hassan district, a speeding truck plowed into a procession, killing eight people and injuring more than 20 others. The accident happened in Mosale Hosahalli village on Friday, leaving the community in shock and grief.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah quickly shared his sorrow on X (formerly Twitter). "It’s deeply saddening to hear that a lorry ran over people heading for the Ganesh Visarjan procession in Hassan, causing several deaths and serious injuries to over 20," he posted. He extended prayers for the departed souls to rest in peace and for the injured to recover soon. The state government stepped up, announcing Rs 5 lakh compensation for each deceased person’s family. They’ll also cover all medical expenses for the injured. "This is an extremely painful tragedy. Let’s stand together with the affected families," the CM added.
Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda echoed the pain, calling the Hassan Ganesh Visarjan accident "deeply heart-wrenching." He prayed for the souls of the eight victims and wished quick recovery for the injured. "I share the grief of those who lost loved ones in this unfortunate mishap," Gowda said.
Opposition Leader R. Ashoka expressed deep shock over the canter lorry ramming into the procession. "This tragedy in Mosale Hosahalli has caused immense heartbreak," he stated. He prayed for peace for the deceased and strength for their families. Ashoka urged the government and district officials to act fast—ensuring top treatment for the injured and fair compensation for the bereaved.
BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra also condemned the "horrific disaster" during the Ganesh festival procession. "A canter vehicle suddenly crashed into the crowd, killing eight and hurting 20—it’s shocking," he said. He called for immediate medical aid and compensation, while praying for the victims.
Police reports reveal the chaos unfolded during the Ganesh immersion event. The truck driver, identified as local resident Bhuvanesh, lost control due to overspeeding and rash driving. He slammed into the crowd, which included folks from Mosale Hosahalli, Hirehalli, and nearby villages. Enraged locals dragged Bhuvanesh from the truck and beat him before police intervened. He’s now in the hospital, and early probes point to negligent driving as the main cause. Identities of the deceased are still being confirmed.
