Kalaburagi, Karnataka – The High Court’s Kalaburagi Bench will hear petitions today from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and five other groups that want to march through Chittapur on November 2. The petitions ask the court to let them hold a padayatra, a foot‑march that the RSS plans to mark its 100‑th anniversary.

Earlier in the year, the RSS tried to organize the padayatra on October 19. Authorities refused permission, citing law‑and‑order concerns. The RSS said it had completed all required paperwork and appealed the decision to the High Court. The court told the RSS to file a new application for the November date.

Now, in addition to the RSS, the Bhim Army, Dalit Panthers, and a Kuruba community group have joined the petition. They all seek the right to hold processions on the same day. The Karnataka State Farmers’ Association also filed a request, this time to march for flood relief from the central government.

The State Christian Welfare Society approached the court with its own petition, asking permission for a peace walk. In its claim, the society stressed that the walk is a neutral, not confrontational, event and that it typically holds prayers on Sunday mornings.

The bench will consider the batch of petitions later this afternoon. Before that, Deputy Commissioner Fouzia Taranum, who has already asked the police for an opinion on the logistics and security of the march, forwarded the petitions to the court.

The issue has attracted attention from Karnataka’s political leaders. After a letter from Minister Priyank Kharge demanded a ban on RSS activities in public spaces, the Congress‑led government introduced a new law that requires all private organisations to obtain prior approval before holding any event on public or government‑owned premises.

BJP officials countered that the RSS remains powerful and capable of confronting “hundreds of Priyank Kharges and Siddaramaiahs.” The High Court’s decision is expected to set a precedent for public processions across the state.
