In Leh, Ladakh, top military leaders recently met with Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta to discuss the tense security situation in the region. Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, head of the Northern Command, and Lieutenant General Hitesh Bhalla, commander of the Fire & Fury Corps, visited Gupta at Raj Niwas and shared updates on law and order, including emerging challenges.
This briefing comes amid ongoing unrest in Ladakh, where protesters have demanded the region’s inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. That provision focuses on tribal area administration and sets up autonomous district councils to give locals more control. Tensions boiled over into violence on September 24 in Leh, leading to the arrest of 44 people, including prominent climate activist Sonam Wangchuk.
Ladakh’s Director General of Police, SD Singh Jamwal, announced the arrests during a press conference in Leh. “We’ve nabbed the main orchestrators of the violence,” Jamwal said. He highlighted Wangchuk as a key figure, noting that police detained him under the National Security Act (NSA) and sent him to Jodhpur Central Jail. Officials moved him there overnight after his arrest in Ladakh.
Jamwal also raised concerns about Wangchuk’s alleged ties to Pakistan. Police recently arrested a Pakistani Press Information Officer (PIO) who had been in contact with the activist, according to Jamwal. He pointed to Wangchuk’s attendance at a Dawn media event in Pakistan and a visit to Bangladesh, saying, “There’s a big question mark on him, and we’re investigating.”
The Ladakh protests turned chaotic on September 24, with demonstrators setting fire to a local BJP office. Two days earlier, four people died during clashes involving police firing. Authorities accuse Wangchuk of stirring up the violence. He had been on a hunger strike to push for the Sixth Schedule demands, but it ended just as the unrest escalated.
As Ladakh’s push for greater autonomy continues, security forces remain on high alert in the strategically vital area near the India-Pakistan and India-China borders. The Northern Command’s involvement underscores the military’s close watch on these developments.
