Bengaluru, Oct. 24 – In a hostile speech from a BJP office, Karnataka’s opposition leader Chalavadi Narayanaswamy slammed the rule‑making Congress government, saying the state’s law‑and‑order situation has “completely collapsed.” He told reporters that the government has failed to protect ordinary citizens, pointing to a string of violence and negligence.
He began by citing a recent incident that shook the city. “Yesterday, seven men broke into a house and raped a woman – they were arrested later,” he said. “If people felt safe under law and police, why would that happen?” Narayanaswamy implied that the police were ineffective and that the government was indifferent to citizens’ safety.
The opposition chief also highlighted other high‑profile cases that he says show a pattern of administrative failure. During the Dussehra festival, a nomadic woman tried to sell balloons in Mysuru, and an 8‑ to 9‑year‑old girl was raped and murdered. “No one has been held accountable,” he said. “The accused came from Kalaburagi, but the minister in charge—Priyank Kharge—has not even investigated.” He repeated the same criticism when naming another case: an 11‑year‑old Dalit girl in Vijayapura was raped and killed, and the government “turned a blind eye.”
Narayanaswamy turned to unpaid civil‑service employees to show how the Congress administration has neglected basic services. Anganwadi workers have gone three months without pay, and librarians have not received salaries for 20 months. A mother in Sedam said she couldn’t manage her household and took her own life, while a waterman in Chamarajanagar committed suicide after 27 months of unpaid wages.
He added that the state’s economic woes are hurting people’s trust in the government. “People are angry and disheartened because of the mismanagement that started when Congress took power.” The opposition chief also took a swipe at road conditions, noting that no road in Bengaluru is free from potholes and stressing that pregnant women can’t reach hospitals in time, causing them to give birth on the road.
“Congress won 136 seats, but you never discussed the vote‑trading claim you keep talking about,” Narayanaswamy said. “You raise different issues to cover up your failures.” He also mocked Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, saying the leader “doesn’t even know the difference between a new moon and a full moon” and that the state is “shrouded in darkness” under the current government.
The speech, delivered amidst a wave of public discontent, highlights growing criticism of the Congress administration’s handling of violence, public services, and infrastructure. The opposition’s charges come as Karnataka voters prepare for the next election, with many questioning whether the government can address rising concerns about safety, wages, and basic civic amenities.
