BJP leader Babulal Marandi slammed the West Bengal government after a medical student was allegedly gang‑raped in Durgapur. In an interview, the former Chief Minister of Jharkhand said law and order in the state has collapsed and that the government is stifling people’s voices.
Marandi said the state’s ruling party is “thuggery‑driven” and that it ignores complaints. He highlighted incidents where he claimed an MP’s attacker was protected by the state. “If anyone raises a voice, they are attacked,” he added.
The alleged assault took place at a private medical college late Saturday. The victim, a second‑year student from Jaleswar, Odisha, was taken by a classmate under the pretext of getting food. A few other men then entered the area and gang‑raped her. The student’s father told reporters that the college’s security was insufficient and that no serious action had yet been taken.
Shortly after the incident, BJP spokesperson and MP Sambit Patra posted a video on X accusing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of threatening riots if the central government conducts the SIR (State‑in‑Residence) exercise. Patra argued that Banerjee warned that “riots would break out in Bengal” if SIR were carried out, calling the statement a threat.
In the same video, Patra claimed Banerjee had said she would not back down even if it meant shedding blood for Bangladeshis and Rohingyas. He said the chief minister had used such warning remarks in a speech the day before.
The incident has drawn national attention to security lapses in medical colleges, the role of West Bengal’s government, and the broader debate about the upcoming SIR exercise and potential civil unrest. The victim’s family is urging authorities to investigate the crime promptly and to improve campus safety.
