Lawyer Rakesh Kishore, who tried to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India BR Gavi on Monday, says he has no regrets about the incident.
He told that the attack was a reaction to the CJI’s comments on a petition that was dismissed earlier this month. The petition asked the Supreme Court to restore the head of the Lord Vishnu statue at the Javari temple in Khajuraho. Chief Justice Gavi dismissed the plea and made a sarcastic remark that “you should go to the idol and ask it to fix its head.”
Kishore said that comment “hurt” him. He added that similar Supreme Court rulings, he said, have hurt other communities. “If you can’t provide relief, at least don’t mock the petition,” he said.
The lawyer insists he is not a violent person and that the shoe incident was not an act of aggression but a protest. “I am not afraid and I have no regrets,” he told . He added that he would even go to jail or be executed if that is what the law demands.
Kishore also criticized the Supreme Court’s decision on a bulldozer attack by state officials in Bareilly. He urged the Justice to uphold the dignity of the Constitutional office. “The CJI sits in a constitutional post and is addressed as ‘My Lord.’ He must maintain that dignity,” the lawyer said.
He also pointed out that the Bar Council suspended him under Section 35 of the Advocates Act. He claims the Council skipped required procedural steps and was “flouting the law.” He has been asked to return client fees and is willing to pay them if necessary.
The shoe attack on Chief Justice Gavi sparked condemnation across India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on social media that “there is no place for such attacks in society.” He praised the Chief Justice’s calm response and called the incident “utterly condemnable.”
Rakesh Kishore’s action has drawn widespread criticism and calls for his prosecution, but he remains determined to stand by his act and will not issue an apology.
