India mourns the tragic stampede that struck a political rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district. At least 36 people lost their lives, and more than 60 others suffered injuries during the event on Saturday. The chaos erupted as a massive crowd pushed forward while TVK chief Vijay addressed his supporters.
People in the surging throng collapsed under the pressure, and rescue teams struggled to reach them amid the confusion.
Leaders from across the political spectrum quickly shared their grief on social media. BJP president and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda posted on X, saying he felt “deeply saddened” by the loss in the Karur stampede. He offered condolences to the families and wished a quick recovery for the injured, adding, “May God grant courage and strength to all those impacted.”
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra called the incident “heartbreaking” and prayed for the victims of the Tamil Nadu stampede. She called on Congress workers in the area to step up and support the injured and grieving families alongside local authorities.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge echoed the shock, describing it as an “unfortunate and tragic” event that claimed innocent lives at the Vijay rally in Karur. He sent his condolences and pushed for prompt relief and medical aid from party members.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep anguish over the “tragic accident” and prayed for peace for the departed souls and strength for their loved ones. He ended his X message with “Om Shanti.”
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin responded swiftly by ordering a judicial probe into the Karur stampede. He announced Rs 10 lakh in compensation for each family that lost a loved one and Rs 1 lakh for the injured. Stalin directed senior ministers and officials to handle rescue operations and medical care, and he plans to visit survivors and the bereaved families in Karur soon.
Rescue teams and doctors are still working around the clock at Karur Government Hospital and other facilities. Many victims remain in critical condition in intensive care, so the death toll from this Tamil Nadu rally tragedy could climb higher.
