Bengaluru – The Congress party in Karnataka is in the middle of a leadership debate, and Social Welfare Minister H.C. Mahadevappa has said no single person is essential to the party’s survival.
Mahadevappa, a close ally of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, told reporters that the Congress can decide on any leadership change without needing a specific individual. He pointed out that after former prime minister Indira Gandhi’s death, new leaders stepped up, proving that the party’s future does not hinge on one person.
“We’re guided by our ideology, not by any single leader,” Mahadevappa said. “When the high command or the state leadership decide, those decisions matter. No one is indispensable.”
The comments came after Siddaramaiah’s son, MLA Yathindra Siddaramaiah, suggested that PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi should succeed his father if leadership changes. Yathindra also said Siddaramaiah is at the end of his political career and urged the party to follow a “scientific and progressive” path.
Mahadevappa said he had not heard such statements from the national Congress command or the state leadership. “If someone made that remark, they need to explain where it came from,” he added.
The BJP‑led opposition and pundits have been watching closely, as rumors about a possible leadership shift in Karnataka grow louder. D.K. Shivakumar, the state Congress president and deputy chief minister, declined to comment on Yathindra’s claim but said he would forward the matter to the appropriate party heads.
Meanwhile, Satish Jarkiholi, a senior Congress member, remains in his portfolio as PWD minister. He has not yet responded directly to the comments about a potential succession.
The Karnataka Congress heads will decide the next steps. For now, the party stresses discipline, leadership flexibility, and adherence to its core ideology.
