The new GST rules are already changing how people shop in India.
Lower tax rates are sparking more spending, especially as the festive season heats up.
Across the country, shoppers notice cheaper prices on everyday items. In Surajpur, Chhattisgarh, residents say the drop in GST has made it easier to buy essential goods.
One local mentioned, “After the new GST rates, I bought a refrigerator and got a Rs 2,000 discount. I used that money to buy a mixer.” He added that he views the change as a “very good decision by the Modi government” and that it lifts the public’s welfare.
Another citizen said the reduced tax helped his family buy a scooter within the same budget. “With Diwali coming, the lower tax lets us shop more freely,” he said.
Local traders are feeling the boost too. A Surajpur shopkeeper noted that electronic products have become up to 10 % cheaper after the GST cut. “Prices are down and customers are buying more. Our sales are steadily improving,” he reported.
The upbeat consumer mood mirrors positive signals from outside. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has lifted India’s GDP growth forecast for FY2025‑26 to 6.6 % from 6.4 %, citing comprehensive GST reforms, lower tax rates, and a stronger first‑quarter performance.
Economists predict that festive spending and growing demand will keep India’s economic momentum strong for the rest of the fiscal year. The new GST boost appears to be real‑world cashback for consumers and a firm stepping‑up for India’s growth.
