LS Speaker seeks urgent report from Bengal govt over attack on BJP MP: Kiren Rijiju

In Kolkata, the Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, told reporters that the West Bengal government must hand over a report “immediately” on the recent brutal attack on BJP Member of Parliament Khagen Murmu. The request follows a statement from Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju, who said the assault “signals the unsafe climate created by the Trinamool Congress” in the state.

Rijiju was in North Bengal that Tuesday to assess damage from the heavy rains and landslides that have battered the region. He flew to Siliguri, where he plans to visit several landslide‑hit villages in the Darjeeling hills. “It’s not just about MPs and MLAs,” the minister said. “Every citizen’s safety matters. If someone uses violence instead of the law, we must act.”

The attack occurred in Nagrakata, a town in the Jalpaiguri district, as Murmu—an experienced tribal leader and two‑time BJP MP for North Malda—traveled to distribute relief material after the flooding. The BJP MP and fellow legislator Shankar Ghosh were attacked by a group of miscreants. Ghosh suffered only minor bruises, while Murmu sustained serious injuries to his face and head.

Murmu was rushed to a primary health centre before being transferred to a hospital in Siliguri. Doctors determined he fractured the bone below his left eye, a condition that may require surgery. He is currently in the ICU of a private hospital there, with a decision pending on whether he will stay in Siliguri or be flown to AIIMS in Delhi for treatment. West Bengal Governor C.V. Anand Bose has already visited the MP in the hospital.

The BJP filed a complaint against eight suspects with the Nagrakata police station and staged a protest outside the station, demanding arrests. Yet, no arrests have been made to date.

This incident underscores rising tensions in West Bengal, where the BJP and Trinamool Congress compete fiercely. The Lok Sabha Speaker’s call for an urgent report highlights Parliament’s concern over the safety of elected officials and the lawfulness of the state’s security response.

As the situation develops, observers will watch whether the West Bengal government delivers the required account and if swift legal action follows the theft of law and order in the state.
