Madhya Pradesh has just scored a big win in the world of heritage tourism! The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) picked up the Golden Banyan Award for Best State in Heritage Tourism at the Heritage Week Awards 2025 in Delhi. Union Minister of Tourism and Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, handed over the honour, spotlighting the state’s amazing work in protecting and showcasing its cultural treasures.
This award highlights how Madhya Pradesh is turning its rich history into real progress, aligning perfectly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s idea of “From Heritage to Development.” By mixing old traditions with fresh ideas, the state has become a top player in heritage conservation across India, all while involving local communities every step of the way.
Dharmendra Singh Lodhi, the Minister of State for Tourism, Culture, and Religious Trusts, couldn’t hide his pride. “Madhya Pradesh truly represents India’s ancient civilisation,” he shared. “Think of the stunning Khajuraho temples, the mighty Gwalior forts, and the serene ghats of Maheshwar—they all capture the eternal spirit of our heritage.” He gave a special shoutout to Chief Minister Mohan Yadav for tying heritage preservation to tourism growth that benefits everyone.
What makes Madhya Pradesh a heritage hotspot? It boasts three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Khajuraho Group of Temples, Bhimbetka Rock Shelters, and Sanchi Stupa. Plus, 15 more spots draw global attention. Places like Orchha, Mandu, Chanderi, and Khajuraho are getting active makeovers to keep their charm alive. And guess what? UNESCO recently named Gwalior a ‘Music City,’ adding even more sparkle to the state’s cultural scene.
Shekhar Shukla, Additional Chief Secretary and MPTB Managing Director, explained the secret sauce behind this success. “We’re not just saving our past—we’re making sure local people gain from tourism too,” he said. “Our plans focus on smartly reusing old sites, keeping traditions strong, and promoting responsible tourism that lasts.”
The state government is pouring resources into fixing up structures, adding modern facilities, and using digital tools to bring heritage stories to more people. This smart approach is sparking sustainable tourism, creating jobs for locals, and powering the cultural economy.
With this Golden Banyan Award, Madhya Pradesh solidifies its spot as India’s go-to heritage destination. Here, every ancient monument whispers tales of the past, and every tradition thrives with real pride. If you’re into history and culture, this state’s calling your name!
