Factionalism Rocks Madhya Pradesh Congress: Kamleshwar Patel Slams In-Charge Harish Choudhary
In Bhopal, tensions are boiling over in the Madhya Pradesh Congress as former minister and senior leader Kamleshwar Patel voiced his frustration with the rising factionalism in the state unit. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Patel didn’t hold back in his criticism of the party’s in-charge, Harish Choudhary, accusing him of fueling "groupism" and showing bias toward certain factions.
"Groupism is common in politics, but not like this," Patel said. He stressed that Choudhary’s main role is to unite leaders and build coordination, not act like the party itself. Patel urged state Congress chief Jitu Patwari and Choudhary to step up and address the divisions. "Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi have given you a big responsibility. Differences among leaders are normal, but you both need to bring everyone together," he added, calling for quick consensus to strengthen the Madhya Pradesh Congress unit.
This outburst comes at a time when the party is already grappling with internal rivalries ahead of key elections. Patel, a key figure in the Congress Working Committee (CWC), highlighted how such infighting could weaken the party’s position in Madhya Pradesh politics.
Adding to the drama, another big development unfolded the same day. Senior Congress leader Ajay Singh ‘Rahul’—son of former Chief Minister Arjun Singh—made a surprise visit to ex-CM Digvijaya Singh’s residence in Bhopal’s Shyamlal Hills. It’s been years since the two met, so this unexpected meeting has sparked plenty of speculation in political circles about possible alliances or reconciliations.
Interestingly, both Patel and Ajay Singh hail from the Sidhi district in Madhya Pradesh’s Vindhya region, where their long-standing political rivalry has often made headlines. Ajay Singh, who lost the 2018 Assembly election from his family stronghold Churhat in Sidhi, bounced back with a win in 2023. On the flip side, Patel, who triumphed in 2018 from Sihawal and even served as a cabinet minister in Kamal Nath’s short-lived government, faced defeat in the 2023 polls.
As Madhya Pradesh Congress battles these internal conflicts, eyes are on whether leaders like Patel, Patwari, and Choudhary can mend fences and present a united front. With factionalism in Madhya Pradesh Congress grabbing attention, the coming days could shape the party’s future in the state.
