Madurai Court Rejects Bail for Madurai Mayor’s Husband in Property Tax Scam Case
In a major update on the Madurai Corporation property tax scam, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has turned down the bail plea of Pon Vasanth, the husband of Madurai Mayor Indrani. Justice S Srimathy made the call while hearing the case, pointing out that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested him in Chennai on August 12 as part of their probe into the multi-crore fraud.
The state strongly opposed Pon Vasanth’s bail request, and the court agreed, keeping him in custody for now. This comes after a lower court in Madurai also dismissed his earlier bail petition last week. The Principal District and Sessions Judge there stressed that the charges against him are serious and can’t be brushed off lightly, especially with the investigation still underway.
On a different note, the high court did grant conditional bail to P. Ravichandran, a revenue assistant at the corporation. He now has to show up at the police station daily for questioning and fully cooperate with the SIT’s ongoing probe into the Madurai property tax scam.
The whole mess surfaced in September 2024 when Corporation Commissioner C. Dinesh Kumar spotted shady dealings in property tax records and filed a police complaint right away. A follow-up audit uncovered that taxes on about 150 buildings were slashed without any proper process—something that raised big red flags.
Digging deeper, investigators found glitches in the UTIS online platform used for managing property taxes in Madurai. They also allege that officials took bribes to cut down tax amounts, turning this into a full-blown corruption case. The SIT continues to unravel more details, and the public waits to see how this Madurai Corporation scam unfolds.
