Maha Assembly Speaker directs BMC to take up only road projects in October; sets December deadline for completion

Mumbai’s Road Upgrade Push: BMC Gets Clear Directives to Speed Up Work
In a major move to fix Mumbai’s bumpy roads faster, Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar has told the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to focus on wrapping up half-done projects this October. No new digging allowed unless locals really push for it and elected reps give the green light.
This came up during a key meeting on Friday, where Narwekar laid down the rules. He wants all ongoing road works finished by December to cut down on the usual chaos from endless construction. Attendees included Mumbai BJP President and MLA Ameet Satam, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Bangar, and top civic bosses.
Satam shared the details post-meeting, saying, "We’ve made it crystal clear—no fresh road digging without strong local demand and talks with elected representatives. Plus, from now on, footpaths won’t use paver blocks anymore. We’ll switch to stamped concrete for tougher, longer-lasting results."
He also highlighted a smart fix for narrower streets: Roads under 9 meters wide will now get mastic asphalt, an idea Satam floated back in March. "The BMC has finally approved it," Satam added, sounding pleased.
Worried about shoddy road quality? Satam revealed that all complaints about poor work will go straight to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) for expert checks. BMC has to act on IIT’s advice right away.
Good news on progress too—50% of Mumbai’s road projects are already done. To keep things open and accountable, BMC will roll out zone-wise dashboards online, so anyone can track road development updates in real time.
This push for better Mumbai roads aims to ease traffic woes and make the city smoother for everyone. Stay tuned for more on BMC road works and Mumbai infrastructure updates.
