Mumbai, Oct 13 – Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde revealed a new Diwali bonus plan for the state’s transport workers. The government will hand out a ₹6,000 gift to almost 85,000 Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) employees and officers, and set aside ₹65 crore every month to top‑up salaries. Those who qualify can also take a ₹12,500 Diwali advance.
Shinde, joined by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, announced the move after meeting with MSRTC staff and the workers’ action committee. “Because of heavy rains, the state is facing tough times,” Shinde said. “We are giving this bonus so the Diwali of MSRTC staff can be sweet and helping the corporation grow. We will develop the MSRTC’s land through public‑private partnership (PPP) to boost its income.”
Key points of the plan:
| What | Amount |
|——|——–|
| Diwali gift to every MSRTC employee | ₹6,000 |
| Monthly salary difference (2020‑24) | ₹65 crore |
| Diwali advance for eligible staff | ₹12,500 |
| Grant for all government employees | ₹51 crore |
The MSRTC has asked the state for ₹54 crore to support the Diwali advance. In addition, Transport Minister Sarnaik highlighted the need to improve road‑transport services in Sindhudurg district. He said the district’s geographical spread demands more buses, and he wants five new buses for Vengurla and Kudal depots. The bus station at Oros should be expanded under a PPP model, and a new Divisional Controller should be appointed for the district.
These steps aim to lift workers’ wages, strengthen Maharashtra’s transport infrastructure, and ensure a smoother Diwali for everyone in the state’s bus network.
