Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a new football programme called “Maha‑Deva” on Monday. The goal is to spot talented boys and girls from rural and tribal villages and give them a chance to play abroad.
During a meeting with the School Education and Sports Department and the Maharashtra Institution for Transformation (MITRA), Fadnavis signed a Memorandum of Understanding. Bollywood star Tiger Shroff has joined the effort as the project’s brand ambassador for five years. He will promote the programme through events, social media and public campaigns.
The Maha‑Deva plan will identify 30 boys and 30 girls across Maharashtra using the scouting network of the Western India Football Association (WIFA). Selected players will receive top‑level technical training, academic support and pathways to play internationally.
MITRA announced that the initiative will also link with world football icon Lionel Messi, boosting its prestige and creating global opportunities for young athletes. Messi is expected to visit Mumbai soon, and the MoU was signed in anticipation of his appearance.
“We want to create a new football culture in Maharashtra and open doors for our young talents,” Fadnavis said. “With Tiger Shroff’s support and an international star like Messi, the Maha‑Deva project will bring fresh energy and shine a spotlight on our future stars.”
The programme promises a bright future for Maharashtra’s rural football players, giving them the resources and exposure needed to succeed on a global stage.
