Ujjain’s Mahakal Temple has stepped in after a clash inside the shrine, while also finalising plans for this year’s Kartik Agahan procession.
The temple’s management committee met on Saturday to squash a dispute that began on Oct. 22. Mahant Mahavir Nath of the Rinmukteshwar Ashram and priest Mahesh Sharma argued over the Mahant’s turban during a darshan inside the Garbha Griha. The argument turned physical, with witnesses on the ground and CCTV footage that caught the confrontation.
To preserve the temple’s calm, the committee banned both the Mahant and the priest from using the VIP entry and from performing a sanctum darshan for 15 days. They can still visit as regular devotees. The decision follows a quick three‑day investigation by a three‑member panel that confirmed misconduct on both sides. Officials said the ban ends the dispute and protects the spiritual integrity of the shrine.
The meeting also mapped out the Kartik Agahan Sawari, the annual procession that begins on Oct. 27, the second Monday of the Kartik month. The deity will be carried in five different forms through Ujjain’s streets. Collector Roshan Singh chaired the session and summoned the police, municipal corporation, electricity board and public works to finish security, traffic, sanitation and lighting work.
Security plans include around 2,000 staff, many women constables, spread along the 6‑km route. CCTV cameras will cover the entire march and dedicated parking will be set up for devotees. Health and safety checks will be strict.
A highlight this year is the debut of the Mahakal Band, adding devotional music to the procession. The Harihar Milan ceremony on Nov. 3 will feature controlled fireworks to finish the celebrations.
Mahakal Temple is one of the world’s twelve Jyotirlingas, sacred shrines worshipped as centers of Shiva worship. Ujjain’s ability to calm tensions inside the temple and prepare for one of India’s most revered religious festivals reaffirms the city’s status as a global pilgrimage and cultural hub.
