Maharashtra’s government is stepping up to help farmers battered by heavy rains. On Thursday, officials handed over a detailed report to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, asking for big-time support from the National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF). The goal? To ease the pain for farmers facing huge crop losses from flooding across the state.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis broke the news on his X account. “We submitted a detailed memorandum today to our leader, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, about the heavy rainfall in Maharashtra and the massive losses to farmers,” he posted. “Through this, we’re requesting major NDRF aid for those hit by this natural disaster. #Maharashtra #MaharashtraFloods”
This comes amid ongoing floods in regions like Marathwada. Earlier this week, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde promised quick relief to affected farmers there. He’s been in touch with district officials and NDRF teams to tackle the crisis head-on.
Shinde didn’t mince words about the damage. “Farmers have lost a lot in Marathwada’s floods,” he said. “Our government’s top priority right now is getting them help. The Chief Minister and all ministers will soon visit to check things out personally. We want people to get aid right away. Whenever farmers face tough times, we’ve always had their backs. We’ll work to cover those losses before Diwali.”
To back this up, the state has rolled out a whopping Rs 1,339 crore aid package for farmers whose crops got wrecked by heavy rains from June to August this year. Officials have already completed damage assessments—called panchnamas—for those earlier hits, and money is flowing to farmers’ accounts.
For the latest Marathwada floods, those reports are still underway. Once done, relief will zip straight to bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), making sure it’s fast and fair. This push highlights Maharashtra’s focus on farmer support amid climate challenges and heavy rainfall woes.
