Mumbai – A 28‑year‑old doctor from Beed district who worked at a government hospital in Phaltan, Satara, reportedly took her own life on Oct. 20. She left a handwritten note on her palm that named police officer Gopal Badne as the rapist and accused Prashant Bankar of mental harassment. The event has sparked fury across Maharashtra’s political spectrum.
### Strong calls for an independent inquiry
NCP veteran Ramraje Nimbalkar said the incident had “defamed Phaltan” and urged the state to launch a high‑level investigation. “If the CDR is checked, the matter will be solved,” he said to reporters in Satara.
Shiv Sena’s Ambadas Danve slammed the government for letting the accused walk away. “A woman who has served the public in her life ends up with no justice when the police are the predator,” he said. He demanded an independent board from outside Satara to probe the case.
Former minister Dhananjay Munde also asked for a fast‑track court if an independent SIT were set up. He stressed that the police ignored the doctor’s earlier complaints because she was from the Munde community of Beed, calling it “extremely serious.”
Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar called for the police to be held accountable. “Those who protected the officers responsible must be fired,” he said. “Until that happens, police atrocities continue.”
### Police reaction and state response
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who heads the Home Department, spoke with the Satara superintendent and ordered the immediate suspension of Gopal Badne and Prashant Bankar. The Chief Minister’s Office said the CM would take “stringent action” against everyone named in the doctor’s note.
The Maharashtra Women’s Commission, led by chairperson Rupali Chakankar, noted that a case had been filed under sections 64(2)(N) and 108 of the IPC. Search teams were dispatched to arrest the absconding suspects.
### Family demands justice
The doctor’s relatives claim the police pressured her into a false mortem report. “They tried to force a wrong report on us,” a family member said. “We want the truth and justice.”
### What’s next
Police have launched a police enquiry, and the state government is preparing a detailed report. Political leaders across the spectrum are demanding swift, transparent action. The case is a stark reminder of the growing concerns over police misconduct and sexual harassment in India’s rural districts.
