On Sunday, as India marked the 118th birth anniversary of revolutionary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge honored the martyr with a heartfelt post on X. Kharge highlighted how Bhagat Singh always spoke out against hate and divisive ideas, while raising alarms about growing inequality in society.
In his message, Kharge shared a famous quote from Bhagat Singh: “The love for the country will not go away from the heart even after death. The fragrance of the country will also come from my soil.” He called Bhagat Singh the “Shaheed-e-Azam” – the great martyr – who gave everything for India’s independence. “His patriotism focused on equality and unity, and it still inspires every Indian today,” Kharge added.
Bhagat Singh, born on September 28, 1907, into a Punjabi Sikh family in Banga village (now in Pakistan’s Punjab province), became a key player in India’s fight against British rule during the early 1900s. From a young age, he jumped into the revolutionary movement and even joined Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation Movement for a short time.
Under Bhagat Singh’s guidance, the Kirti Kissan Party transformed into the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association, boosting its role in the independence struggle and drawing sharp public attention. His iconic slogan, “Inquilab Zindabad” (Long Live the Revolution), still rings out in the hearts of many. Over time, his ideas shifted from Gandhian principles to revolutionary Marxism, fueling his bold actions.
Tragically, British authorities hanged Bhagat Singh on March 23, 1931, at age 23 in the Lahore Conspiracy Case. Yet, his spirit of sacrifice and fight for justice continues to motivate millions across India.
