Mamata Banerjee Greets Hindi-Speaking People on Hindi Diwas

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee shared warm wishes with Hindi-speaking communities across the state on Hindi Diwas, celebrated every September 14. In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), she highlighted her government’s efforts to promote Hindi and other languages while respecting cultural diversity.

"Today is Hindi Day. On this occasion, my heartfelt best wishes to all Hindi-speaking brothers and sisters. Every year, we celebrate Hindi Day with devotion. We hold reverence for all languages," Banerjee wrote in her post. She emphasized that her administration values every tongue spoken in West Bengal.

Since 2011, Banerjee’s government has taken big steps to support Hindi-speaking residents. In areas where more than 10% of people speak Hindi, the state now recognizes it as an official language. This move helps make daily life easier for these communities. Beyond Hindi, the government has also given official status to languages like Santhali, Kurukh, Kudmali, Nepali, Urdu, Rajbanshi, Kamtapuri, Odia, Punjabi, and Telugu. They’re even working on developing the Sadri language.

To boost Hindi education, the state set up the Hindi Academy and launched a full-fledged Hindi University in Howrah. Hindi-medium degree colleges now operate in Banarhat and Naxalbari, with postgraduate courses in Hindi starting at several other colleges. Even high school exams offer question papers in Hindi, and students at Rabindra Mukta Vidyalaya can take their secondary exams in the language.

Banerjee also pointed out social welfare initiatives that include Hindi-speaking workers. Free social security schemes cover people in the unorganised sector, regardless of their background. For events like the Ganga Sagar Mela, the government built top-notch infrastructure to welcome visitors.

Respecting traditions, the state declared a two-day holiday for Chhath Puja, a vibrant four-day festival honoring the sun god Surya and Shashthi Devi. Popular in Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Nepal, this holiday shows the government’s nod to Hindi-speaking sentiments.

Hindi Diwas commemorates a key moment in India’s history—on September 14, 1949, the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi in Devanagari script as one of the country’s official languages. It plays a huge role in uniting India’s diverse cultures and tongues. The central government’s Department of Official Language, started in 1975, keeps pushing Hindi’s use in official work. Last year, they marked the Diamond Jubilee of this milestone.

Banerjee wrapped up her message with renewed greetings, underscoring West Bengal’s commitment to inclusivity. Her post reflects a push for linguistic harmony in a multilingual state like West Bengal.
