In Kolkata on Monday, Trinamool Congress state secretary Kunal Ghosh posted a sensational prediction on the twin festivals of Kali Puja and Diwali. Ghosh claimed that West Bengal’s chief minister Mamta Banerjee could become India’s Prime Minister in 2029 or could extend her tenure beyond the records set by the late Jyoti Basu.
The comments were aimed at political opponents, but Ghosh did not name any specific opposition leader in the post. He added that Abhishek Banerjee—the CM’s nephew and a Lok Sabha lawmaker—would likely succeed his aunt as the next governor of West Bengal after she steps down.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Ghosh said:
“In this festival season, the sidelined drama‑loving opposition and the bitter detractors hear it directly from a citizen—Mamata will break Jyoti Basu’s record and be chief minister till 2036, and with her blessing Abhishek Banerjee will take the reins. If she becomes prime minister in 2029, that will be a whole new chapter. The Trinamool team operates from Nabanna, the opposition only lingers on Facebook.”
Why this matters
Jyoti Basu was West Bengal’s longest‑serving chief minister, ruling from 1977 to 2000. He declined the prime minister’s portfolio in 1996 after the Communist Party of India (Marxist) won the elections. His legacy still looms large over state politics.
Mamta Banerjee, the current head of the TMC, is set to seek a fourth term in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. The BJP and other opposition parties are campaigning fiercely to unseat her and end Trinamool Congress’ decade‑long rule.
The predictions made by Ghosh may stir debate ahead of the 2026 polls, as both voters and rival parties weigh the potential long‑term leadership of Mamta Banerjee and the prospects of her nephew Abhishek in shaping West Bengal’s future.
