A medical student from a private college in Durgapur is believed to have been gang‑raped on a night in mid‑October, sparking a sharp reaction from West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Banerjee told reporters that colleges must treat student safety with the same seriousness as any other duty. “Girls should not be allowed to go outside the campus after dark,” she said, citing the “forest area” near the college where the assault is thought to have taken place. Her speech went beyond the single case, asking why many women in India are kept in danger while authorities remain silent.
The student, a second‑year learner from a private medical school, had gone out with a classmate to grab food around 8 p.m. Two or three men suddenly appeared and assaulted her. The classmate allegedly abandoned her and fled. The student’s father described the incident as a “shocking failure of the system” because “there is no response, no protection.”
Police now have three suspects in custody. Asansol‑Durgapur Police Commissioner Abhishek Gupta confirmed that the arrests were made after a quick investigation and that the accused are already before a court. “The police are following standard protocols and are continuing the investigation,” the commissioner said.
Banerjee condemned the crime and warned that “nobody will be excused.” She linked this case to several other violent attacks on women across India—such as the beach‑rape in Odisha, incidents in Manipur, UP, and Bihar—calling for stringent action nationwide.
The West Bengal government has promised to strengthen campus security and to review escort policies for female students. The state’s broader plan, as announced by Banerjee, will include better night‑time patrols and tighter college entry controls.
The incident has ignited fresh debate about student safety, campus security mechanisms, and how quickly law‑enforcement can respond to sexual violence in India. As investigations continue, the public expects the West Bengal government to enforce stricter penalties and ensure that similar crimes do not occur again.
