A father in Kottayam has spoken out about serious allegations of police brutality and harassment against his 24-year-old son, Abhay S. Rajeev. He claims that officers from the Ettumanoor police station assaulted his son and falsely accused him of crimes, even after the family filed complaints with higher authorities.
The incident reportedly happened on March 20, 2025. Abhay was riding his bike from Ettumanoor town when a speeding private bus, allegedly on an illegal route, nearly hit him. When Abhay approached the bus driver at the Ettumanoor private bus stand to complain, police officers—including Circle Inspector Ansil and four others—allegedly attacked him right in front of passengers. During the assault, Abhay’s mobile phone and bike were damaged.
The father says that after this, police took Abhay to the Janamaithri Mediation Centre near the police station. There, he claims, Abhay was beaten again with lathis (batons), resulting in serious injuries to his back. Photos of these injuries were shared by the father on social media.
Even after six months, the family says they have not seen justice. They filed multiple complaints with top officials, including the Chief Minister, Prime Minister, Governor, Director-General of Police, Human Rights Commission, and SC/ST Commission. However, they say no action has been taken.
Adding to their troubles, police allegedly slapped absurd charges on Abhay under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA). These charges were later dismissed by the KAAPA Advisory Board, which criticized the Ettumanoor police for their conduct. Despite this, senior officers reportedly tried to portray Abhay as a drug addict and troublemaker.
The father also claims that former Pathanamthitta SP V.G. Vinod Kumar submitted false reports that led to the cancellation of his family’s caste status—an issue that was later stayed by the Kerala High Court. Meanwhile, police registered FIRs against the family and began proceedings to cancel Abhay’s driving license.
Abhay is currently undergoing treatment for depression. His father insists that despite clear evidence of police abuse, the officers involved remain untouched. He has vowed to continue fighting for justice, no matter what it takes.
“I will pursue justice at any cost,” he says, determined to see accountability for his son.
