Ahmedabad police have arrested the main suspect in the shocking stabbing death of 24-year-old Vaibhav Manwani. The attack happened near the Ambapur canal in Gandhinagar’s Adalaj area late on September 20, right after his birthday celebrations with friends.
Vaibhav, who lived in Ahmedabad, parked his car near the canal bridge with his girlfriend, Aastha Hariyani, around 1:30 a.m. That’s when the assailant struck. He opened the back door, demanded money and jewelry, and turned violent when Vaibhav fought back. Police say the attacker stabbed Vaibhav at least 12 times in the head, chest, and shoulders. Aastha tried to shield him but suffered cuts to her neck and hand. She’s now recovering in the hospital under close watch.
The suspect, Vipul—also known as Vimal or Neel Parmar—comes from the Ashok Mill area on Naroda Road. He’s no stranger to trouble; police describe him as a history-sheeter with charges in two previous murders and several robberies. A two-day manhunt by the Gandhinagar Crime Branch, Special Operations Group, and Ahmedabad Anti-Terrorist Squad led to his capture by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch.
CCTV footage played a key role. It showed the suspect on a bike near the crime scene around 1 a.m. and riding away by 2:30 a.m. Forensic teams collected biological samples and other evidence from the spot. “Technical surveillance and CCTV tips helped us track him down and take him into custody,” a senior police official explained.
Right now, officers are questioning Vipul to see if anyone else was involved in the Vaibhav Manwani murder. Aastha’s full statement, once doctors clear her, could fill in more details about the brutal Gandhinagar stabbing.
Locals near the Ambapur canal are calling for stronger night patrols in these quiet, isolated stretches to prevent future attacks like this.
This case stands out amid Gujarat’s overall drop in crime. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the state has seen fewer serious offenses like murder, attempted murder, rape, kidnapping, and robbery in recent years. In 2021, Gujarat’s crime rate for major crimes fell to 11.9 per 100,000 people—well below the national average of 30.2. Crimes against women also decreased, from about 27.10 per lakh population in 2019 to around 22.90 in 2022.
