Mangaluru police say they’ve arrested a 55‑year‑old man for spreading support for the banned Popular Front of India, or PFI, on social media.
The accused, Sayyed Ibrahim Thangal, lives in Ramakunja village in the Uppinanagandi area. Police caught him outside the Urwa Store in Mangaluru on 9 October.
A formal complaint from a police sub‑Inspector started a case – Crime No. 113/2025 – at the Mangaluru North Police Station. The case is filed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the UAPA. Forensics investigators seized Thangal’s mobile phone to check his posts.
Thangal’s WhatsApp message, posted the day before the arrest, praised PFI’s ideology and was said to stir public fear. The government declared PFI an unlawful association on 28 September 2022.
The police took Thangal to Bangalore’s 49th Additional Civil and Sessions Court, where he faces a special NIA court. Judges sentenced him to judicial custody until 24 October 2025.
In another blot on the city, the Mangaluru City Crime Branch found a fake‑document racket linked to bail requests. According to police, several accused had been using forged Aadhar cards and Pahani documents as sureties. A tip on 9 September sparked the investigation that led to multiple arrests.
The Operation: Employees of the crime branch uncovered that the forgery network had been creating fake identity papers to help detainees secure bail. The crackdown came after investigators saw the documents used by bail sureties in court.
Both cases underline the police’s focus on cracking down on banned groups, illegal propaganda, and document fraud in Karnataka’s largest city.
