Congress leaders in Manipur announced a fresh push to strengthen the party’s outreach to scheduled‑caste voters.

On Friday, Mallikarjun Kharge, the President of the Indian National Congress, approved the appointment of 54‑year‑old Ayangbam Oken Singh as Chairman of the Manipur Congress Committee’s Scheduled Caste Department. The decision takes effect immediately.

Who is Ayangbam Oken Singh?
Singh is a longtime social worker who turned to politics. He began his political journey with the National People’s Party (NPP). In the 2022 Manipur Assembly elections, he contested the Sekmai (SC) seat but lost to BJP’s Heikham Dingo Singh. After the election, he joined the Congress and is now a member of the state legislature.

The All India Congress Committee’s (AICC) General Secretary, K.C. Venugopal, released a statement confirming the appointment, highlighting Singh’s grassroots background and his commitment to uplifting scheduled‑caste communities.

State Congress reaction
Keisham Meghachandra Singh, the Pradesh Congress Committee president for Manipur, commented on the situation in the state. He warned that the BJP government’s “arrogance, injustice and divisive politics” are pushing communities apart.

“People are suffering,” he said. “Roads are in ruins, and the state’s highways have never seen proper maintenance. The lack of infrastructure has become a daily hardship for residents traveling between towns. The BJP’s so‑called double‑engine plan has failed to deliver.”

Meghachandra Singh spoke of the pain felt by mothers, the frustration of young people, and the silence of those in power. He called for a shift away from politics of hatred to a future of peace, justice and dignity for all Manipur residents.

What this means for voters
With Oyaganbam Oken Singh at the helm, the party aims to revitalize its reach among scheduled‑caste voters. The new chairperson’s mandate includes addressing local grievances, improving road conditions, and ensuring that the community’s voices are heard in party decisions.

The leadership move signals the Congress’s intent to rebuild trust, bridge divides, and bring tangible changes to Manipur’s infrastructure and social welfare.
