On Sunday, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla visited Noney district to check on the world’s tallest railway pier bridge being built over the Ijei River. The bridge is a key part of the 111‑km Jiribam‑Imphal rail line that will link Manipur’s capital to the national Indian Railways network.
Railway engineers briefed the Governor on the construction progress. They said the bridge is almost finished and should open in the 2025‑26 financial year. Bhalla thanked the workers and urged them to keep up the good pace for people’s benefit. Earlier this month, he reviewed the whole Jiribam‑Imphal project.
The Northeast Frontier Railway says the Rs 14,322‑crore line is over 95 % complete. Once finished next year, the rail line will boost tourism, bring in new industry, create jobs and drive overall socioeconomic growth in Manipur. With the connection, Imphal becomes the fifth capital in the Northeast—after Dispur, Agartala, Itanagar and Aizawl—to have a rail link.
After inspecting the bridge, the Governor met with the Deputy Commissioner at the district office. The DC, the Superintendent of Police and other district‑level officers handed him reports on development projects. They highlighted plans for national highway work, the local law‑and‑order situation, and security measures. Staff from health, education, power, agriculture and horticulture departments shared updates and raised concerns about staff shortages.
Governor Bhalla listened carefully and met with local civil‑society groups. They handed him memoranda seeking support for community projects aimed at improving the district’s welfare.
The visit underscores Manipur’s push to join India’s rail network while driving local development and addressing key infrastructure and manpower challenges.
